The world’s coral reefs are some of the most beautiful and biologically diverse places on Earth. Containing life as small as a shrimp to the size of a sea turtle, coral reefs provide food and homes to the ocean’s wildlife. Unfortunately, the world’s coral reefs are disappearing – and with them, the sealife that depends on them. Since 1991, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has been a leader in coral conservation, studying how best to raise coral outside of the ocean and restore it to its home after growth. As a leading member of SECORE (SExual COral REproduction), an international consortium of coral scientists, biologists, and aquarists, the Zoo contributes funds, expertise, and time to finding a way to save the wild beauty of the coral reefs – and with them, the diverse sea life that calls them home.
